Effectiveness of Decoronation on Traumatically Ankylosed Maxillary Incisors: Case Report
Shin Sun-Hahn

Kim Dong-Hyun
Abstract
Avulsion and intrusion cause the worst prognosis because they injure both the pulp and the periodontal ligaments. Ankylosis is one of the common complications since the periodontal ligaments are damaged. Replacement root resorption causes infraocclusion due to localized alveolar bone development disruption and results in inclination of adjacent teeth. A traumatically ankylosed tooth should be removed before the inclination of adjacent teeth affects future prosthetic treatment of injured tooth. Decoronation is a conservative and safe surgical procedure to preserve the bucco?palatal width and the vertical height of the alveolar bone. This report aimed to present two cases of traumatically ankylosed incisors treated with decoronation. The crown and the root canal fillings were surgically removed and remained roots were replaced with alveolar bone. Removable space maintainer was used for aesthetic and functional purpose until the final prosthetic restoration is possible. This case report describes a comprehensive approach of traumatically ankylosed incisors.
